New 2 person rule head count
The last thread about this was rather old and few people I converse with regularly here answered. That being said I would like a head count of who has at least 2 people present when working with a 7+ 40lbs or more snake. Shouting range counts, though sometimes it is hard to yell when you can't breath .

Re: New 2 person rule head count
The few times I've been lucky enough to hold something over 6', I had someone in the same room as me. Other than than, I handle all of mine on my own (they're all under 5')

Re: New 2 person rule head count
As I live by myself I can't really follow the two person rule, However my folks live in the main house about ten feet away.
I just don't put my 7' boa around my neck, cause I know it would not turn out good.

Re: New 2 person rule head count
depends on the snake for me... I'm comfortable with any of my boas alone... The retics will be more of an ~8ish foot rule... My girl is already 5 feet and still a skinny noodle so I'm sure she's not gonna put on much weight in a couple feet, lol... Any 6-7ft retic I've played with is still a noodle
The burm.... We've done the 7foot rule since we had her because she was 7feet when we got her... She's over 10feet now and about 50-60lbs I know her strength just hanging on and I wouldn't wanna feel a BIG HUG, lol... So 2 ppl with her at all times

Re: New 2 person rule head count
I always have someone present for any snake that is over 6 feet. Just incase. Even a sick boa I recently got, who is pretty weak: I always have my husband or a friend with me. I would hate to have an accident happen and become more fodder for the media hype.

Re: New 2 person rule head count
Still fully planning on following this rule when Riley gets bigger, though it's not so much of a worry yet. He is frightfully strong for his size though, so it probably won't be too long before I implement it. He's only about 6 1/2 feet right now.

Re: New 2 person rule head count
I had a 8ft BCI a few years ago and used the 2 person rule with her. She was very gentle, but still you have to be safe.
I miss her....man did my back yard look nice before we got the dogs....

Re: New 2 person rule head count
In our home, it depends on the snake. We couldn't handle the adult Savus alone because of their strength and wiliness! Female especially, she liked to perform the handcuff maneuver or she would get between your fingers and then bend them if funny directions. Wasn't fun!
I can deal with some of our adult boas alone, but not all of them.

Re: New 2 person rule head count
I handle homer my 13f Burm alone almost everytime. Not a problem for me besides the weight gets a little hard to manuever around. I won't get him out unless he's completly willing. There is usually someone around. At least someone in the house though. I keep a big knife near me as well in case I get lucky and he leaves me a free hand lol.
Do I agree with the 2 person rule? Of course but it also depends on the situation. The previous mentioned two people for every six ft of snake I do not believe in. Just to use a boa for example. A six foot boa was to coil me I'm pretty sure I could get it off myself and that would go for most boas. Then again there's a few smaller people here who would need the two person rule and that's fine. It all should be judged by situation really and what your capable of and your strength and capabilty. Not necassarily by the size of the snake. I should mention some of the reason I handle homer alone is simply because I don't always have someone available to help when I need to take him out or want to take him out. And I don't even really bother anymore because I'm so use to it and comfortable with it.
I have spent alot of time with homer. I got him when he was a month old and have spent everyday until he got to ten ft handling him when I could. He has never bit me or even struck at me. Now Im not saying he won't bite me but I feel comfident enough with this snake that I can decide upon opening his cage rather or not it's a good idea to take him out right then. While snakes can be unpredictable they are still the same as every other animal. They still have habits that they usually stick to just lime they will all have off days where they don't wanna be touched bothered or taken out and will attack you or rather defend theirselves to get you to leave them alone. It's all about knowing the snake and it's habits body posture and behavior.
Even though I'm this comfortable with homer i wouldn't handle another snake of this size without someone else present.

Re: New 2 person rule head count
I only have one snake currently that falls into this category and she's a doll. That said, I still implement the two person rule with her. I gave up my BCO when she was little because, at the time, I was by myself. And I agree wholeheartedly with Justyne. Handling a snake on my own is not worth becoming another notch on the press's belt.

This is exactly the attitude that gets people killed. The "I understand the danger but I am going to do it anyway" attitude.
I hope to god that you don't die because it would be bad for the reptile keeping community.
