Ok, I went to East Bay Vivarium today to look around (biggest reptile store in the nation) and they sell big bags of aspen shavings for $5 and I bought 2 bags of those 3 weeks ago. So I was talking to a worker there about it and it's PINE SHAVINGS and I thought it was Aspen. I told him that it was poisonous for snakes and he said its basically a myth. He said "We've been using Pine Shavings for our reptiles for the last 40 years with 0 problems at all. Maybe if the shavings were still wet with the oils then yeah, but our shavings are kiln dried." I'm still weary about this now that I found out it was Pine Shavings, but at the same time I don't know if I should believe it.

What do you think I should do? Should I change out all the bedding with Aspen or cypress multch? What bedding do you guys use? I don't want to use paper towels or newspaper because I read that snakes can feel insecure slithering on a slick surface.

I met up with him Saturday and he ended up giving me two 4x2x1 cages, two 4x2x1 divided in half cages, three 4x2x2 cages and two 4x2x1 bases plus two 6x2x2 ft cages and all are already wired with heat tape and 10 nice thermostats. I managed to get all of that for $500. Im thinking its a steal.

I just learned that I will be doing regular snake shows with Bloomington's park and recreation program!

They came into my environmental science class and we began chatting and it went from doing one show that involved bats and local animals... to this... :faint: I'm so siked that I can do something that can portray snakes in a better light. I have done this before but not nearly on the scale they want.

Now my problem is...I don't think my snakes would be enough! I would love it if any one near southern Indiana would like to partake in educating the public. OR, any advice? Other times I have done this it was with the Hoosier Herp Society (i.e. I brought my snakes there, talked one-on-one) but this is the first time doing it on my own and I wouldn't want to dissapoint. (hopefully they will want to do much more in the future)

If anyone is interested I will post pictures of the events. :)

Wish me luck!!!

So here's the campus snakewalk story.

I'm sitting around Sunday thinking of what I'm going to do this day. It's a wonderful day outside. I could go for a run... I could go to the record store... or I could take a stroll across campus with Isis. The decision was easy :kid:

It's around 4:00 in the afternoon, nice day outside, so I pull out the snakebag that my aunt and uncle were kind enough to make for me.

And I place it in the tub I use to transport Isis.

I place Isis in the bag, zip goes the string, pop goes the lid and off we go.

I arrive on campus and walk across a field with a group of kids playing ultimate frisbee. Someone had just scored, and the one team was standing around getting ready to throw off as I walked up. They saw me and, while they're friends waited for them, they asked questions and we chatted about Isis for a few minutes.

I made it to the next road and came across a rather tall guy with his family. I saw him keep looking at me and getting his kids (~4 and 7 years old) attention. I walked by, but looked over my shoulder one more time to see how interested they were and they were looking at me so I turned around with a smile and walked up to them. They were very nice, had a few questions, and were a bit awestruck. They let their kids pet her, and as I was walking away they asked if I would come back and let them take a picture with their kids and Isis. I let them hold her tail and they got a few neat photos.

I moseyed down the road and came across the library. There was a hedge that stuck out, so you wouldn't really see people coming around the corner. I stayed back for a second to see if anybody was coming - and there was. I stayed back, the dad saw me and warned his family, i let them pass and we exchanged somewhat awkward smiles. As I made my way around the library two guys who had just arrived from Turkey last week asked for some pictures and we chatted for a moment.
Nothing too eventful for the next 25 minutes or so just a few brief conversations. I made my way across campus walking along the river trail and staying in the shade since the sun was a little warm. I came up to a road that crossed the river and crossed it. I ran into a college-age couple and talked to them for a few minutes.

Then a girl caught up to me and we started talking. About 15 minutes went by and then I broke what is now my golden rule: Don't ever let anybody else hold your snake while in public. Human nature being what it is, I have let three other people hold my snake while in public in the last year and have now decided otherwise from here on out.

So she has my snake around her neck and 10 seconds later an SUV cop pulls up and turns her lights on. I said to the girl "We have company" and then the cop walked up with a big smile on her face and started asking questions. Groups of people started gathering, maybe up to 10 or 12 people in the area at a time. The whole while, a good 20 minutes, the cop just kept asking curious questions - not cop questions, just friendly curious questions (a little too friendly at the 10 minute point). But yes, in the end, the cop was parked in the middle of a 4-lane 25mph road with her lights on for 20+ minutes.

(The cop didn't want to be in any photos, but this is where we were)

The cop left, and we continued to talk to the few people that were around for another 5 minutes. Then they left. Then her and I kept talking for about another 20 minutes and not one more person came up - group mentality, if others are doing it it's OK! Cops have a way of drawing attention too.

(Yes, I see her neck and people close to her - part of the reason to not let anybody else hold her. With having her, I can position myself better to avoid something like this.)

So I get Isis back and give Roxy her Ipod that takes video (she got a video of herself speaking Farsi(Iranian) with Isis to show her grandma) back.
On my way back to my car I was passing by Beaumont Tower and thought it would be a great photo.

Somebody across the street came over to talk for a second so I was lucky to get this photo

(I can't figure out why this one rotates - it is fine on Photobucket - PM me if you have a solution please)

Then I ate a guacamole burger with a Bells Two-Hearted Ale for dinner.

i have not got one picture of max since he moved and i realize it is because of all david is going through. he promises me he will take max outside next week and get me pics.

again i am sorry if i offended anyone but missing max is really starting to mess with me. i been staying off threads that might make me angry. lol.
i am sure i will be my old self in no time. seeing pics of max will do me a world of good. i dont even want to know what i will be like when chances passes. my mind wont even let me think about that.
They have dinner scheduled for tonight, so they can't stay THAT mad at me, really. There was a kafuffle, so a lot of the names (we just... can't use numbers, lol) got a bit mixed up, but luckily, we know which snake looks like which, and only one isn't eating and we have him singled out. So some names are different than before, but they're the same snakes. :) Senestro's living in her new home, so she's not pictured here, and the one non-eater isn't either because I didn't want to bug him.

Hello Everyon,
I am new to the forum and to boas. I am looking to get my first boa constrictor. I have almost 3 years under my belt with ball pythons. I am looking for a snake that is a little less shy and a little more handible. So that so of led me to look into boas. I understand that most BCI males will only get in the 5-6 ft range which isn't bad. But the smaller dwarf species have caught my eye getting 4-5 ft.

What are your recommendations of dwarf subspicies? I am still in the research stage. I want to make an informed decision. Also, I am not interested in breeding. This would just be a pet.

Thanks,

I'm looking to get a snake, and have never owned a snake before. I've owned plenty of turtles, and cared for lizards but not a snake.

I've done some reading but no amount of reading can compare to the vast experience acquired by this community. So I thought I'd ask for some advice.

I really would like to know what my options are.
Here is what I am looking for, and I hope I get some good suggestions.

I have limited space in my apartment I would like a snake that stays "small". I'm hoping to find one that doesn't exceed 5-6 feet in length.

I'd like a snake that can be handled frequently.

I'd like something that isn't ultra aggressive. I don't want a belt I have to feed either, just something that won't try to kill me every time I feed it.
(I understand proper and frequent handling will make a snake more gentle and tolerant of handling, and that individual snakes can be bitey or temperamental as a part of their personalities. I also know some breeds can be more aggressive than others. )

I would like something from an arid climate who likes a dryer tank.

I don't mind feeding the snake, some people are squeamish but if you've ever seen an aquatic turtle eat you get over it.

I can't think right now of any thing else I should say other than I'm debating just going back to lizards or another tortoise. though I am looking forward to trying something new.

There is a local individual looking to re-home a red tailed boa, but I don't know if he would be appropriate for some one new to the snake lifestyle.

Regular season is finally upon us. This Thursday night the Vikings take on the Super Bowl Champion Saints in what promises to be a great game.

Myself, I am a Titans fan and I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming season. If we start out 0-6 again, I will be an unhappy boy indeed. I am thrilled about our entire offense, but I am afraid that they have failed to re-sign too many key free agents in the off season on defense.

So who is your team and what do you think of their chances this year?
